It is now known that if the caller says they can click the warning screen and then the stylus-pad seems to deactivate... unless they're on the calibration screen... that the solution is to just tell them about the repair and replacement options.

How do I know this? I was just on the phone with an actually nice and helpful person who... well my problem is unique and odd. Perhaps falling off the desk a few times is to blame... Didn't find out till I plopped in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Then I tried a few other games... at first it would allow like 2-4 taps before it stopped listening. Now we're down to the one click.

Since *I* wasn't a/an (body part) on the phone -and I suspect a manager was nearby who gave the nod- I got the on warranty price of 60 USD. Else it would have been 85 USD which when he said it he asked if I had heard a different price. I told him the Standard Console Repair price:

The Technician Laughs At You And Tells You You'd Be Better Off Buying A New -or new used- System.

60 bucks is much easier to swallow than 85... besides a new used ds lite would run 85... and I'd probably snap it. They feel fragile in my hands. My roommate's DSi feels delicate as it is and even that's more robust than the last dslite I handled.

(Sherman set the wayback machine for the time of the Tiny Atari 2600's being ON THE SHELF (Not for much longer at the time but...))

"Problem with the 2600 there. Hm... listen. The diagnosis and repair are going to run you the price of a new one of these. Well about 75% of the price. I can get you a deal on a new or repaired one..."

What did I end up doing? I bought a 7800 - still have it and it still works ^-^v

<lj:music>The wondering what I'll have for Lunch Samba</lj:music>

And there are those in this universe who say I don't ask around enough, search online -which is frustrating as the Internet is not what it needs to be when you are searching for things: which is to say when you're searching it needs to be a True Domesday Book.

And so without further ado:

I am trying to find an Audio Ubergeek website that when you click on say... an
Onkyo TX-SR707
It shows you data on the unit, the manufacturer's spam (via links preferably), local opinions, and most importantly... WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT INSTEAD... from any other brand. And no not just what (store) has... but WHAT CAN BE FOUND... Anywhere!

Thus if I looked up the Onkyo Rosencrantz, I'd see

that it had every Surround Option... plus that new Valhalla DSP

that I'd get a link to Onkyo's website on the device,

that Bob47 has one, but it destroyed his theater cabinet because it is 250LBS. Also how Seiryo mounted his in a chair and as the bugger runs at 85 degrees all the time warms his RealDoll with it.

that due to the weight I might want to get:

Yamaha Guildenstern instead which is only the size of a Dell Server.

Pioneer SpaceFolder -with a built in Beowulf Cluster to protect and serve your music and video

Denon Illuminatum - which has NO user serviceable parts, but will never breakdown anyway

Marantz's Pinnacle -which has issues with sharp edges and an odd case design

Philips 'Olympus Sound Mountain' -which people think just sounds pretentious... and think it is a camera...

Sony's XXDoubleZ-04 will be out next month but you might not want to wait as while it does everything everyone else does product testing reveals that it's too fragile... even though it's the size of a VAIO... and of course due to size can be annoying to fully and completely cable even with the 45 proprietary jacks for just about everything.

So yeah. Someone from the future, an esper, machine intelligence, or alien please reply. domo arigatou gozimashite. And to think I haven't watched the Surrogate trailer for... wow... dunno. I'm seeing Gamer in probably 12 hours. Maybe that's where 'Sheryl' comes from... of course I just see her as a 'In case of problem... call in Sheryl.'

As you can see from the ALMOST UNRELATED character write up... Proudmore probably shouldn't have been playing in the room where the fit hit the shan and the shan tried to summon an elder god... but well got devoured and expelled.

I will admit that I had been thinking about ShadowRun this week so that could explain some of the Hodgepodging and Themeblendering. I mean Adam West-like Dialogue coming out of Bruce Willi's face while he enters a crime scene that could have anything from fantasy folklore, aliens, or mythos horror... and maybe even several at the same time.

Good Times eh?

"Where's the ending?"

I suppose I could toss something together.

"NOOO! <lj:music>Case Fans Only</lj:music>

So. Found something mildly intriguing at:

www.stevencarlson.net/2009/03/05/a-better-apache-error-log-viewer/

And then spent chunks of the week trying to make it work. Why so long? Well. I'm going to break some people.

First let's talk about the success:

After I cleared an inexplicable divide by zero error out, and some minor tweaking to point at my apache logs... and then set up perl to want to run the script... it ran beautifully. It also allowed me to make a few more tweaks to squash a few bugs found:

Running Apache on Windows with Strawberry-Perl.

Now's a great time for an LJ-Cut... because 'no-one' wants to hear about Windows.

Well maybe you do care if you get scads of attacks or 'I'm looking for routers, dur' spam from your network monitoring suite. Because I get both, I was ready for something anything to also parse the error log files - and AWstats doesn't at current. So since my logs are starting to grow immense and I do want to skim them, it was time to try prettying up the eyesore(s)

I looked online to little avail. I just wanted something kinda fast and as AWstats covers the access logs I wasn't too concerned about getting something that would shine the kitchen sink for me. In time I found the above link.

And then the pain began

I'd been kind of hoop jumping with Strawberry-Perl. I'd screwed something up in the install by installing soemthing else and then DBI started flaking out. Thus 'cpan' has been kinda unusable, and ppm prefered me to already download modules and THEN it was happy with doing anythign i wanted to them pre or post install.

Thus now that I wanted to do something again... uh oh.

Before that I hit a really large snag. I didn't know about the ppt package... so I had no tail. Tail is a major component so... I was now on the hunt. Insert needing tail jokes here. Better insert several... I'm at risk of becoming a movie title.

I finally found File::Tail.

Erroneously I thought I was done. Finding a module and using a module are not the same. Especially when Perl is not in your top ten languages.... more like number 11 -and you only really know English. See the problem?

So I thought that I'd just turn it into somethign I could call... hey I need a tail in normal windows also every now and then. This should be great.

First I had to recall/lookup how to make damned sure I'm getting the right variables from the command line... and set it up to even WANT to take command-line arguments. This was almost hair pulling frustrating.

It took a day of staring around online before it was finally taking arguments and running just fine. Then while the script was not liking that I noticed that hey... there are MORE arguments it can take. Time to adjust the 'command-line' tail some more. I got that spiffy, but the script still didn't like something and seemed to loop forever printing nothing

Would I never have this bugger running right? Why doesn't the internet talk about this stuff -because they get frustrated and call up a bud who knows... or knows a chain of other people and soon it's fixed? Or they pay someone which kinda insures it's never up anywhere (or is up under some other interpretation 'Catching a ball' vs "Dynamic Holding')

I moved on to other little things... but it kept calling me back. "You can polish rust off your weaponry later... fix me now"

I then decided that I needed a fresh development environment even if it wasn't the same OS. It worked for the author right? He's on a Linux/Unix platform so should work fine there.

Never say such when the machine has been collecting dust because you're kinda afraid to have it online 24/7 because either:
#) It's old
#) It's finicky
#) It lived in a datacenter where it may have been run halfway into the ground
or
#) You're worried it's a power hog on the utility bill.

Why? Because it refused to start. Now I'm already a mess from screaming about other things all day and wanted something sedentary to grumble through. And then the Long Beeps kick in. I about kicked it in. No seriously. It's a cheap case so that wouldn't even cause must physical resistance. I was THAT irked with the beeps. Maybe if they were a different tone. It felt like I was a dog and it was a dog whistle and I couldn't get away.

I checked some more for perl only solutions. But now there's 'sick pc'. That poor copy of CentOS just languishing without yum updates. sniffle sniffle. Let's just enumerate what I had to fiddle with:

a bad dimm socket -I know! Sudden as hell

disconnected kvm cables - popping out because I was...

balancing the light light light machine on my knee

balancing my vga to dvi upconverter

more disconnected kvm cables -at the kvm this time.

Bliss huh? In the end it was working and back under the Big Switch.

As if I was trying to process a document in Windows I had to 'cpan install' the blinking QE2 [started with letting it configure itself... then doing cpan make not cpan install seeing it had an update to cpan outside the yum -y update I'd just done... and let's just say "LWP::UserAgent" has a few dependancies all requiring permission to install]. I was getting Gentoo flashbacks.

I still had to bug fix... some were my fault. I'll grant that readily. Missing quotation mark. Oopsie. But that Divide by Zero threw me. If I hadn't been comfortable with 'perl <filename.cgi>' NOTHING would have told me. Apache just refused to do anything -like it was acting in windows.

SAY?! YOU DON'T THINK?!?

No it wasn't that easy. Because I am 'teh dum'. I still wanted something better than File::Tail something more drop in like *ix Tail. (Jokes go here again). And in a random search on cpan itself. I found (in the end it was called PPT::UTIL).

But Strawberry-chan is still a bit ill. Time to check for some updates/cold medicine. Boom 5.10.* And it FIXED ALL THE PROBLEMS. YAHOO! cpan install LWP::UserAgent... up to date! cpan install PPT::UTIL... problem-less!? YAYBLES! Bip bap boom I paste in the weird locations for tail, make some new functions from the originals, and rename the mess I made here and there making File::Tail compatible sections. Lastly just to be safe I comment out the 'divide by zero' line and BOOM... it works. Just like on the CentOS box.

Thank the Maker it's over. Well save some art & art-links.

So how is everyone else? @.@

Not busted [' ']

All wikis start out GIMPED. Almost no templates, almost no extensions. Because they've yet to come up with a collection that's all (something).

Now then so far as I've seen... they tell you about the Extension situation. I've yet to see where the template situation is explained.

So what does everyone end up doing? Going to a wiki they like and going to Special:Export and exporting damned near everything in say Category:Templates and then importing into their own. Then just zapping what they hate into the bit bucket.

So given that this is probably a tacit KNOWN occurrence, what's the hold up on the all (something) template collection? Hard to say I've only seen the 'Can we get a collection?' on a talk page that's several months old. With no reply no less.

That don't require software installations on EVERY SINGLE BOX ON THE NETWORK TO BE USEFUL. (otherwise just getting something like Netlimiter or Speedmeter Pro to report to a central authority and then have that graph something might be nice)
graphs graphs graphs

I'm basically no longer pumped to make this post so I'll just submit it and work on it later or something.

So... I said REBUILDING. Because I had this built ALREADY. And somehow I added SOMETHING that pissed the power supply into a mostly working partially dead/pissed state.

"What's the rest of the system?" "Yeah post ALL the specs!"

Fine Fine.

(titles from NewEgg ... original specs.)

x1 ... OCZ 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit

I added a 3ware 12 Port PCI 64 card in a 32 Slot... everything was still working. (well sure half the memory was invisible but I was planning to upgrade to 64bit. Just wanted to hammer out any defects first.) The 3ware had nothing to do (was afraid it might do something silly... (I'm paranoid and RAID afRAID)) but again at this point everything was fine.

I ordered and installed a second 1 TB Disk. Boom. Problems started cropping up - IT DOES NOT HELP THAT THIS IS WHEN MICROSOFT PUT OUT THEIR NEW PCI EXPRESS DRIVER (yeah this was all circa 11-20). Thus when I backed out of THAT change things were still kinda flakey. Cards would NOT crossfire anymore etc...

So I installed 64bit to a 164gb drive that was smart failing but would work for this purpose. 64's been pretty unhappy as well -not as messed over as the 32bit that is refusing to boot -.-; but still Unhappy.

Thus I want to make damn sure that before I put the NEW PSU in (yeah my wallet is on fire ;.;) I've got the power calculations DOWN.

Too bad I don't know what numbers I need. I've got billions of numbers if I look around...

"Well what are you trying to do just rebuild? Use the single TB configuration."

Well...

"Uh oh..."

I want to fill the case with drives.

"FFS!"

I know ;.; It's why I wish I knew what numbers I need.

"Buy a server chassis!"

I do NOT want to buy a 3U server. I'm not racking this.

"I did NOT hear that... lalalala"

So yeah. Power Math. Anybody seen an online calculator for this kinda thing?

Or at least hopefully get people musing about this, and maybe taunt me...

I'm currently staring at a Maxtor 6L300S0 with a manufacturing date of 19Dec2005 that will not let any box it's powered up in POST. Not even power up. It is as if the second something tries to happen with the drive -like spin up- down it goes.

So what happened?

Power Supply gave out - literally smoked out. Replaced. System would not power up with SATA drive installed.

Got a new MB thinking that was the then unknown issue. System would not power up with SATA drive installed.

Carefully installed one drive at a time after being certain no power remained floating through the circuits. Everything worked except the SATA drive which caused the box to NOT be able to even POST.

Recap: Regardless of which box or power adaption method I've chosen the drive will flatline anything it's in. Even got an external power adaptor powered extranal enclosure's apator to WHINE oddly when I plugged it in to that.

As I don't really have 'legal' right to the porn I've legally downloaded -can't have Data Recovery techs copying it for themselves... I don't HAVE distribution rights- I can't say just send it to Seagate's Data Recovery center.

Now all the data is sacred to me... yep... even all 563582638351.arfarf copies of desktop.ini -and because I've already thought abnout it- just saying 'toss it dude it's dead' is not a good response. I'm looking for the well thought out musings or crackpot ideas you've heard worked. Especially in a situation like this. I mean I might have *2* working motherboards for all I know...

hell the old PSU might not even be 'dead' just shorted out in a violent way because the DRIVE decided to go south. I dunno.

Help @.@ (laughing is valid too)

It's been a little while since this happened by the by... kinda finally recovering from the motherboard purchase wallet wise.

Well and my alternate biology.

Right so... On the one hand it's kinda nice that with all the pill taking (more than once a day to me might as well be once a second hence the 'all the pill taking') I keep a bit more hydrated than I'm used to being. On the other hand it's really annoying because it's easy for me to remmber ONE pill time. Two is impossible. I don't wanna know about 3+ But to continue with why it's annoying.

I can't take anything else on some of these. One pill GRAPEFRUIT JUICE is it's kryptonite, and another sunlight (2+ hours) and aspirin are frowned on. Not that aspirin WORKS for me but sometimes my mind and physiology will accept that it MIGHT work and so it kinda gets to TRY to do it's job.

"But Bob..."
"Wait why are you calling me Bob?"
"I call everyone on the internet Bob."
"Um... Okay."
"Anyway... but Bob... what DO you do for headaches?"
"I take Centrum."
"VITAMINS?!"
"It works. It's probably just a psychological thing, but I highly believe they'll work so presto."
"And you hinted I'm nuts for calling everyone on the internet Bob. Pshaw."
"Wait till you hear that Caffiene hits me like Alcholic BEverages hit everyone else... With the sweating and the can sleep whenever I feel like it for the first 2-4 hours after I've had a can and then I'm wired after that."
"I'm talking to a Freak."
"Yes Bob. You are."
"Good to know you know, Bob."
"Good to know that you know that I know, Bob."

P.S. To Explain the 'Music' There. Killer Loli music is the kind of thing you could hear coming out of a Killer Loli's iPod while they're playing 3 different Shooting games at the arcade, while watching the place for their intended targets. Usually a boy or girlfriend (even if the target is unaware of their newfound 'good' fortune), and anything they want to hurt in a bad way (often NOT the same being... unless you ask THEM that is). It's unknown what exactly Killer Shouta listen to as many that are common are too grumpy or too angsty to go to arcades for pseudokilling. There are probably several here and there that can blend in well but only play one game expertly so you can't tell them apart from the other game experts. <lj:music>Horrifically Emo Thoughts Screaming in my Head.</lj:music>

I've reached the point in the job hunt where I can't look at anything anymore -mostly because it's all the same crap reposted infinitely- but don't want to look at nothing. Yes. I'm in Tale of Two Cities Mode. I don't want to work but I don't even want to be a sudden affluent billionaire who never has to work again. I'm just sick of it all.

And here come the "Why are there no kings putting out calls for heroes anymore?" or "Why can't I just get some body guard position? Shoot a gun or two... stab a few people. Die some day knowing the protectee is safe and fine?" But then I recall getting eaten by a grue/dragon/brigand or shot by some punk/thug/yakuzawannabe don't require any kinda relevant skills and that's probably why they appeal. Making the other guy die for their cause takes skill.

I guess it's just that I'd rather be looking for something that matters than just some 'Ant Job' that no one will notice was or wasn't done later. I'm not trying to make a mark on the universe... just do something that at least makes me FEEL like I accomplished something. 'Saved the Princess. *cough* Hope the Vizier doesn't pull anything but... *cough* That's kinda up to someone else now. Never knew I had so much blood. *cough* But At least if he pulls something... it won't be to kill her. That was the dragon. Stupid hungry dragons. Guess I see him in hell soon *cough* *dies*'

Hopefully there's not more 'Eld is Depressed Story Time theater... where next time he bleeds to death having taken out 2 yakuza toadies while the client probably ran out and got hit by a car.'
